Imtiaz's Chokka

Imtiaz Ali has directed four films in 6 years and all have got critical acclamation clubbed with fancy box office success. I found it interesting to study and bring out few observations.

Let’s look at what’s common and what’s not in his films.

Common Factor:
  1. All are about youth. The youth who is not sure about what’s love. Abhay Deol rejects the marriage proposal stating no major reason. Then, he realize that he is in love with Ayesha only. Kareena is crazy about some Anshumaan. Deepika wants to name the relationship with Saif as friendship only. Remember, they celebrated ‘break-up’ party. Nargis has fallen in love to Ranbir. Love is complex to understand and realize, but it’s easy to happen. It’s natural. Imtiaz has elaborated various facets of Love, without branding it as a love story. That is the art reflected by him.
  2. Three out of four are edited by Aarti Bajaj, who is former wife of Anurag Kashyap. We must say that she got good hands in editing.
  3. Mesmerized Music is another most common factor. His all films have outstanding and enjoyable tracks.
  4. Irshad Kamil is the man behind the lyrics for all four films. Such classical adaptation of situation, feelings is expected from very few artiste only. He is one of them. Unfortunately, audience is so obsessed with stardom that many times they ignore the gems or finest contributor of the industry.
  5. Abhay, Ayesha, Gesilli and Nargis have in fact made debut through Imtiaz’s films. (Ayesha was first signed by Imtiaz, but her first release is Taarzan).
  6. It’s about Pain. It will drag you to realize the importance of love. Imtiaz has tried his best so audience can feel the love.
Not Common:
  1. All films have different male lead. I point out it as a salient skill of the director. He has proved that it’s not about relationship or bonding with one or two persons only. Yash and Dhrma Productions have SRK in many movies. Imtiaz beaks such success norms.
  2. All films have different female lead. In fact for Jab We Met, audience felt that it’s Kareena focused movie.
  3. Music composition is the soul of such films. Imtiaz has tried three different music composer for his Chokka. All have given their respective best.
I would like to conclude that he has grabbed the nerves of audience and art together. Let's expect the best from him and his team in time to come.

Enjoy and Share !!

Udaan (2010)

Yesternight I was browsing my TV set. My search ended at DD National (DD1). The film ‘Udaan’ was being telecast. I heard the ‘good and great’ about the film. I recalled that few months back, I read its review in one of the Hindi newspapers. I also knew that film has won many awards and hearts of critics. So what? I decided to watch the remaining part of the film.
I will not tell you much about the story, so you can watch it later. Awesome and off-beat film, yet very simple and yet classic in its content. You will feel like you are reading an interesting novel. It is a critically acclaimed directorial debut by Vikramditya Motwane. He has earlier worked with Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Deepa Mehta. This wonderful movie was produced by Anurag Kashyap, Ronie Screwvala and Sanjay Singh and was released in July 2010. Yes, it the same Anurag, who has directed very well known films Black Friday and Dev D

Ronit Roy (Rishab Bajaj of Kasautii Zindagii Kay and hero of 1992 super hit Jaan Tere Naam) has done superb acting. The film is about a 17 years boy Rohan, who wants to be writer, poet and story writer. While his father Bhairav Singh dictates him, his career and his life. Bhairav Singh is an engineer, a businessman and also a dictator. He orders his son(s) to call him as ‘Sir’, not ‘papa’. Now, you can imagine about the person he is. The role of Rohan is played by 21 year old Rajat Barmecha. The film run slow at few moments. But the intensity of the story and sequence of scenes will not let you loose the interest, at all. It gets 9 out of 10 for the story. It portrays very well the emotions and conveys what it wanted. It leaves several sarcasm on people like Bhairav Singh and our society. Ram Kapoor (Jai Walia of Kasamh Se) also plays small but important role. You can feel his presence and dilemma he is facing.

The major part of the film runs in Jamshedpur, a city of Tatas, you can feel so. You will see the statues of JRD and Sumant Moolgaokar (GK: Tata’s vehicle Sumo has been named on him Su-Mo). You will enjoy the word "disgraceful".

The music is composed by Amit Trivedi, which is well in the line of the film. It will not distract you from main stream of the story.

Does Rohan get his own wings to make ‘Udaan’? Does he get the freedom from the dictator ‘Sir’? Let us make the udaan (flight) to watch it and spread the message.
